The shortage of Magnesium in foods has lead to a widespread Magnesium deficiency in the adult population.

A study conducted at USC Keck School of Medicine, Los Angeles, USA and published in Journal of the American College of Nutrition concluded that the current intake of Magnesium from food is only 68% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) leading to Magnesium deficiency in the general popuation (1).

A Study carried out in Germany concluded that the reference test number of 0.75 mmol/l Mg is inadequate to diagnose Magnesium deficiency. 0.9 mmol/l Mg is the more adequate number (2).

Magnesium deficiency cannot be corrected only by the Recommended Daily Allowance. Based on the most up to date research, Health Canada recommends a Adequate Intake (AI) of 500 mg per day in order to correct Magnesium deficiency (3)
